Recently, a girlfriend of mine told me that I need to have a Smashburger. It’s a chain of burger restaurants that can be found internationally in a couple of companies, including the United States. Their website indicates the following as their claim to fame: “At Smashburger, we believe that smashing is better. Our handcrafted burgers are smashed, seared and seasoned to order, using our fresh, never frozen 100% Certified Angus Beef®. ” I have to be honest – this is against the grain for me. I don’t typically smash my burgers at home. A Smashburger just opened up about 5 miles from the house so my husband and I decided it would be a good place to stop for a bit before our movie date.
Now, my girlfriend set this up pretty high – she said it was better than Five Guys. As fast delivery burger places go, Five Guys has always been very good. Immediately, I noticed that there are more options here than Five Guys. For example, there are several other burger toppings – like avocado or aged swiss. Additionally, there are more sides available and hand spun shakes.
We got there about 11:30am on a Saturday and it was pretty quiet. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions and a side of haystack onions. My husband ordered a make your own burner (with grilled onions, aged swiss, bacon, and a fried egg ). Check out my order below.
Be warned – this will be a messy eating experience. That said, it’s delicious. From what I could tell, the burger bun is steamed so it has a lovely softness. The burger patty has a nice griddle on it and is seasoned really well. Salt and pepper are not necessary. After a few bites, I decided the burger had to stay in one hand (to keep it together). I wanted to keep the burger in tact so I could get a complete bite each time. So, my right hand had the burger and my left hand had to alternate between soda and haystack onions. Speaking of the haystack onions, they were typical but also very good. Pretty salty so if you’re looking for a sodium fix, I suggest ordering them.
Finally, my husband and I decided to split an Oreo milkshake. The straw was nonsense! There were some really big cookie chunks in there so – use a spoon 🙂 Very classic and tasty. It reminded me a but of the Oreo McFlurry (in a good way) but not as thick.
The great thing about this meal was how quick it was delivered. I’d say we had everything delivered within 5 minutes to our table. It’s awesome. We were able to grab a good bite to eat and head out shortly after eating.
Now that said – is it better than Five Guys? Honestly… I believe they are on par with each other. If you want more of a selection with your toppings, choose Smashburger. For the all-American burger with cheese and bacon, they are head to head.
Let me know your thoughts 🙂
